Middle Grades: First Week of School

The Middle Grades Class is off to a good start!  Our first main lesson block is on Form Drawing. The students have drawn combinations of straight lines and half circles in standing form and running form, and freehand squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles.  We will continue to work on these figures in week 2.  Here is an article about form drawing that explains the emotional concepts and educational value drawing these figures.

As a class, we began to discover every consonant-vowel-consonant word there is by using a three card flip-book.  Some of these words will appear on the first spelling bee, which will be on Monday, August 20. Words will be sent home on Monday, August 13. The class is listening to me read The Phantom Tollbooth, which is a lovely book filled with words and math and the strange adventures of Milo, a boy who doesn’t think anything is worth doing until he gets a mysterious package.  We also began to play our pentatonic flutes, and the Strings Class met twice. Please help your child remember to bring their violin on Wednesday and Friday. They had Spanish every day, Practical Arts (formerly known as Handwork), Yoga, and Fine Art.  Thank you for sharing your children with me. It’s going to be a good year!
