The Samson Parashina Award

Samson Parashina, president of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, has developed a holistic approach to integrating community development and cultural preservation with protection of wildlife and conservation of natural space in Kenya.  In his honor, we offer three scholarships to students of color enrolling in 1st-6th grade who demonstrate exceptional interest and enthusiasm for environmentalism or natural sciences. To apply:

  • Student must have completed their application to The Garden School of Marietta for the 2019-2020 school year.

  • Student must submit a 300-500 word essay on the topic of their particular environmentalism or natural sciences interest, and a letter of recommendation.

  • Awards will be made by April 1st, 2019.

The following awards will be made: 1st Place: $15,000 merit scholarship, to be applied to tuition as $3,000/year over 5 years. 2nd Place: $10,000 merit scholarship, to be applied to tuition as $2,000/year over 5 years. 3rd Place: $5,000 merit scholarship, to be applied to tuition as $1,000/year over 5 years.

The Rigoberta Menchu Tum Award

Rigoberta Menchú Tum is a lifelong advocate of indigenous rights, especially those of indigenous women. She has organized resistance to state-sponsored oppression and reminds us all that citizens have a responsibility to hold our government accountable for acting justly. In her honor, we offer three scholarships to students enrolling in 3rd-6th grade who demonstrate exceptional civic interest. To apply:

  • Student must have completed their application to The Garden School of Marietta for the 2019-2020 school year.

  • Student must submit a 300-500 word essay on the topic of responding to injustice, and a letter of recommendation.

  • Awards will be made by April 15th, 2019.

The following awards will be made: 1st Place: $15,000 merit scholarship, to be applied to tuition as $3,000/year over 5 years. 2nd Place: $10,000 merit scholarship, to be applied to tuition as $2,000/year over 5 years. 3rd Place: $5,000 merit scholarship, to be applied to tuition as $1,000/year over 5 years.

In a nation with over 700 living languages, “Mama Aleta” has risked her life to create a powerful movement for environmental preservation, working to empower villagers from indigenous tribes to stand up to the government and commercial interests. In her honor, we offer three scholarships to students enrolling in any class or grade who speak a language other than English in the home and who demonstrate a high level of empathy and an inclination toward constructive collaboration. To apply:

  • Student must have completed their application to The Garden School of Marietta for the 2019-2020 school year.

  • Student must submit a piece of art related to the subject of compassion, accompanied by an essay of approximately 100 words per grade (e.g. 200 for 2nd grade, 300 for 3rd grade, etc), and a letter of recommendation.

  • Awards will be made by April 15th, 2019.

The Nancy Gruver Award

Founder of New Moon Girls, Nancy Gruver, has dedicated her career to supporting girls in identifying and confronting sexism and social injustice, and equipping them to journey through adolescence with confidence, joy and a supportive community. In her honor, we offer three scholarships to girls enrolling in 5th - 7th grade.: To apply:

  • Student must have completed their application to The Garden School of Marietta in the grades 5th - 7th for the 2019-2020 school year

  • Students must submit a 500-word essay describing what "empowerment" means to her

  • Awards will be made by April 15th, 2019.

The following awards will be made: 1st Place: $16,000 merit scholarship to be applied to tuition as $4,000/year for up to 4 years. 2nd Place: $12,000 merit scholarship to be applied to tuition as $3,000/year for up to 4 years. 3rd Place: $8,000 merit scholarship to be applied to tuition as $2,000/year for up to 4 years.
