Second & Third Grade: October 27 - 31, 2025
Happy November, Second and Third Grade Families,
Last week we concluded our Fables language arts block by spending much of our week in free writing activities. In the spirit of season, the children each wrote a story about what they would do if they were alone in an old abandoned house. Some of the stories were very silly, with ghosts surprising the children, while others were quieter, exploring the different rooms in the old house and finding hidden treasure. The children are learning to express their ideas through writing, and many are gaining the confidence to share their stories with the class on Fridays. Watching the children grow in their writing capacity has been a joy.
This week, we begin our fourth block on Native American Legends with a focus on Cherokee stories. Historic cultural stories from Indigenous people in our area help to further connect our students with the natural world and deepen their appreciation for cultural diversity. We will hear The First Fire, Uktena the Horned Serpent, and The Two Wolves this week. This block will be accompanied by a focus on math skills. In Second Grade, the children will explore the multiplication tables through movement, artwork, and hands-on manipulatives as they create multiplication circles. In Third Grade, memorization of multiplication and division facts will become their main focus. Memorization of math facts is a critical component for preparation in learning higher level math skills. Home practice/reinforcement of math fact recall is encouraged.
