Kindergarten Honeybees: September 8-12, 2025

Dear Honeybee Families,

We had a full and beautiful week together. In preparation for the Day of Courage, the children began their shooting star handwork project. To begin the week, the children wet-felted with an array of colors. As we sprayed soapy water onto the wool and gently patted it down, a gasp of wonder arose when the students saw the fibers begin to blend and transform into a large, matted rainbow of felt. As they worked the felt, the children sang, and from time to time, we held the felt up to the sunlight, checking for little spots that still needed filling. The next day, the children were delighted to discover woolly rainbow stars tucked into their craft bags, magical shapes that had emerged from their own felted creation. Over the course of the week, students carefully sewed their stars, found sticks to sand smooth for handles, and decorated the stars with ribbons and bells. This handwork project was a lesson in being resourceful, as the children had to search the forest for their own sticks. It also offered opportunities to strengthen their fine motor skills and to settle into more focused work, from using pressure and rhythm while sanding, to careful and deliberate movements with their needlework.

The shooting stars project wove in beautifully with the story we shared for the Day of Courage. The theme of our tale was about being brave, even when feeling afraid. In the story, two children seeking their courage to face a dragon were showered with shooting (and singing) stars along their journey's path. These stars guided and fortified them, so that when the moment came, they could approach the dragon not with fear or force, but with thoughtfulness and open hearts. In the end, they discovered the dragon meant no harm, and through their courage, they were able to help him.
