First Grade: September 15 - 19, 2025
Dear First Grade Families,
We hope you had a restorative Fall Break, whether at home or away. Students appear to be refreshed this week and ready for school again. No other class does “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed” quite like our First Graders. They are continuing the Math block they began before the break.
Leading up to the break, students ventured into their new block on the qualities of numbers, beginning with one through four. On the first day, during a discussion about what there is only one of, students’ delighted smiles and nods demonstrated their consciousness that they are the only one who is them! The feeling of “only one me” was explored artistically via colorful crayon self-portraits. In First Grade, students are guided through drawings in their Main Lesson books. Nonetheless, each drawing is unique, especially in the case of these self-portraits. Students offered additional examples of uniqueness, including the earth, along with its sun and moon, and our state of Georgia. Students then practiced writing the number one as an Arabic numeral, as a Roman numeral, and spelled out. They will explore the remaining numbers up to 12 in the same way. In the car on the way to school, try talking with your child about the quantities they see around them. “How many wheels are on a car?” “How many lights are on the traffic signal?” “Let's count the blue cars!” The children are so excited to learn math that it is easy to have fun with it.
The week was rounded out with our exciting Day of Courage festival. Students sang with their older schoolmates, witnessed a special ceremony for Third Grade students, and had a ball playing games in mixed-age groups, hosted by high school students from Academe of the Oaks, a Waldorf-inspired high school located in Decatur. Some wonderful memories were made!
