Fourth & Fifth Grade: September 8-12, 2025
Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,
Thank you so much for taking the time to attend Curriculum Night! It was a pleasure to meet with everyone and further discuss the plan for the year, as well as address questions and comments. The feedback was greatly appreciated.
With the outdoor classroom fully set up, the class has been spending more time enjoying it for both fun and work. Lately, we have been receiving many visits from tussock moth caterpillars. This later turned into a scavenger hunt, where we found six of them in the perimeter of our forest classroom before our Main Lesson period! The class has begun their second Main Lesson block: Wonder of Number. In this block, the students will have the opportunity to strengthen their skills in the four mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The students had the opportunity to create an improvisational math story, where the class had to solve math problems while following along with the story as a way to decode the details of the story. The class also learned the tips and tricks on how to determine if the sum, difference, product, or quotient of two numbers will be an odd or an even number before solving the problem. This math hack was taught via the story titled “A Tale Of Two Kings,” where King Even and King Odd do a series of challenges to see who will win access to the biggest castle in the Number Kingdom. Over the course of the next two weeks, the story will continue. As a way to merge class topics with downtime at home, have your child retell the story each week and see how the number duel progresses over time with the new findings and conclusions that were made in school.
This month, the class has been introduced to a biweekly list of twenty spelling and vocabulary words that are relevant to this block and the previous block. In class, the children have been learning how to use dictionaries to confirm the parts of speech and the definition of each word. In addition to helping your child with spelling practice, it can also be helpful in assisting them in how to form sentences using each word, so it can become a part of their everyday vocabulary. Overall, everyone in class is looking forward to the new month and many of the new activities and class topics that are planned ahead!
