Second & Third Grade: November 10-14, 2025
Hello Second and Third Grade Families,
Last week, the children were delighted by an unexpected touch of winter on Monday when they noticed snow falling outside our window. After a rush of excitement, the children quickly bundled up and spent the last hour of the day playing in the flurries. Several children tried to catch snowflakes on their tongues, some sang “Let It Snow” while dancing in circles, and everyone had a wonderful time together.
The class continued their exploration of Cherokee culture and legends. On Tuesday, the children spent the morning making dolls out of corn husks after hearing the legend “Why the Corn Husk Doll Has No Face.” The story tells of a doll who became so smitten with her own beauty that she could not stop gazing at her reflection in the water. Because of her vanity, the Great Spirit took away her face as a punishment. The children found the story both funny and fascinating, and they had a great time reenacting it with the dolls they made.
Later in the week, the children listened to the story “How the Possum Lost Its Tail” and learned about traditional Cherokee games such as Stickball, which is similar to lacrosse, and Chunkee, which loosely resembles bocce ball but is played with spears. In the afternoon, the children played an altered (and safer) version of Chunkee together. The class has truly embraced learning Cherokee traditions and stories, and they are even beginning to pick up some of the language. Many of the children can now count to ten in Cherokee, which has been an achievement for them!
Multiplication tables practice continues daily, and some children are beginning to practice division problems as well. Class practice usually begins with a short review before students work in pairs, independently, or in small groups with the teacher. All are progressing in their understanding of multiplication as a concept and memorization of the multiplication tables.
