Kindergarten Chickadees: December 8-12, 2025
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
Thank you for joining us last week for a beautiful Winter Spiral. The children were all so brave and reverent as they walked with their candles, lighting the path for those who came after them.
Last week was an exciting week in the Chickadee class! On Tuesday, the students had the rare opportunity to watch two of our resident river otters swim in the campus pond. They also saw the otters eating fish on the pond's bank! The students have occasionally asked whether the pond has fish swimming in it, and this was a fun way to discover that it does. During lunch on Wednesday, a hawk flew from the ground on one side of the outdoor classroom to a low tree branch near the platform, where it stayed for several minutes. It was an excellent week for animal sightings around campus.
The Chickadees rolled beeswax candles last week, adding wax decorations and wrapping them in tissue paper with golden fabric bows. All parts of this project built fine motor skills as students rolled textured wax, used small shape cutters to cut out decorations, and practiced tying bows with the fabric. Rolling the candles and tying the bows also crosses the left/right midlines of the body. In Waldorf Early Childhood classrooms, there is a focus on preparing children for the grades by developing hand muscles for writing and crossing the midlines of the body to prepare the brain for reading. Engaging in fun and creative activities engage childrens’ imaginations while also preparing them for formal academics. This week will be filled with fun and exciting end-of-semester activities.
We hope you all have a wonderful break filled with family, rest, and fun. We look forward to seeing you all on January 6th!
