Hello, Second and Third Grade Families,

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend Curriculum Night. We began with a discussion on the class auction project and then broke out to speak to the specialty teachers. We still need a class auction rep, so please email me if you would like to volunteer. Thank you also to those who were able to attend our All School Meeting.

Last week, we concluded our block on grammar skills with a week-long review of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. The students created a grammar book, and they practiced labeling the parts of speech in sentences. They also practiced using proper punctuation, such as periods, commas, exclamation marks, and question marks. In the morning circle, we reiterated these skills with punctuation poems. These lessons were accompanied by the story of The Tower of Babel and Moses. While we are ending this block, we will continue to hear Ancient Hebrew stories during extra Main Lesson time as we have with our study of the Noble People.

This week, we are beginning our seventh block, which will cover practical math such as time, measurement, and money. We are beginning this block with a study of nonstandard units of measurement. We will use objects such as pencils, shoes, and different parts of the body to measure the classroom, school, and the students' heights. We will also measure liquids in different containers. This will lead to the question, “Why would we need a standard unit of measurement?” This week’s study of measurement will be accompanied by the story, The King’s Surprise.

This week, the children are also excited to celebrate Chinese New Year. The students in our class have practiced a special dance and have learned a song, and they are eager to perform it in the assembly at 11:30 on Thursday. Thursday is also an early dismissal day.
