Joyful Beginning Bluebirds: April 27 - May 1, 2026

Dear Joyful Beginnings Bluebirds Families,

What a wonderful week we had with the Bluebirds. The rain fairies finally came to visit us and brought us coolness and moisture in the air. The children delighted in jumping in big puddles and digging for wiggly worms in the dirt. Their muddy hands and clothes are the best proof of their deep engagement in nature play. Earlier in the week, we excitedly saw a tiny frog hopping through the small playground in the morning. At pick-up time, this frog returned, as if he was saying goodbye to the children. We also took nature walks to the pond and to the farm, spotting some cute turtles taking sun baths on the branches.

During circle time, we introduced a new fingerplay about a little caterpillar:

Caterpillar, caterpillar, where will you go?
Up and down the branches to where the flowers grow.
Caterpillar, caterpillar, what do you do?
I spin my chrysalis and then rest too.
Caterpillar, caterpillar, why, why, why?
Because, you see, I want to become a butterfly.

As the children recite the words of this fingerplay, they also learned how to make a chrysalis and a butterfly with their hands. Engaging in fingerplay and small muscle movements is an important part of our day. The children not only improve their capacity in memorizing new words and improving their speech, but also practice coordination and build up the small muscles of their fingers. Some fingerplays also incorporate number sense as the children count how many bees fly out of the hive or how many pumpkins rolled out of sight. The Waldorf emphasis on engaging the whole body and mind is beautifully reflected in these meaningful learning moments.

On Friday, we celebrated Murphy’s early birthday. We felt so special to be able to spend the day with Murphy and her family. Thank you for the delicious birthday treats.

In the classroom, we introduced a new story called The Caterpillar and the Butterfly. This week, the children will use watercolor and coffee filters to create their own unique butterflies.
