Middle School: December 8-12, 2025
Hello, Middle School Families,
The Sixth graders continue to join Ki Nicole’s Ancient Greece block in preparation for the Pentathlon in April! To read about their Main Lesson, please click here.
This week in the Chemistry Block, the class learned about solutions through enjoying hot cocoa! Aside from being delicious, it provided an opportunity to discuss the various parts of a solution: solute, solvent, soluble, insoluble, etc. During lab, students measured and mixed 2% sugar solutions of 8 different sugars in order to test for the presence of reducing sugars using Benedict’s Solution. The class learned about the importance of lab safety, precision, and consistency required when measuring, using controls, as well as ensuring there is no cross contamination when conducting experiments. Many were surprised at the results of the sugar testing, as they had hypothesized that sugar sweeteners would all test positive, when in fact, honey produced the strongest positive result. Color indicator tests are beneficial to use because they bring a visual experience to the chemical testing the students are performing. Students wrote up a several page lab report, complete with an illustration. Finally, the class took notes on how to draw a Fischer projection (a 2-dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional molecule) of a glucose molecule (monosaccharide), as well as drew a Hawthorn projection of a sucrose molecule (disaccharide).
As we approach the end of the first semester of the year, students in Ki Lesley’s math class have been wrapping up a unit on the measurement of geometric figures (length, volume, shape, surface area, etc.). Students in Ki Melissa’s math class have reviewed concepts taught this semester (fractions, decimals, geometry), including expanding their experience solving a variety of order of operations equations (using PEMDAS).
