Kindergarten Honeybees: January 12 - 16, 2026

Dear Honeybee Families,

Thank you to families who participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. We appreciated your support with the card-making at last week’s Wednesday Community Walk or on MLK Jr. Day, your food donations, and your participation in packing and delivering lunches on Monday!

The children were delighted to discover ice scattered throughout our forest when we returned to school last week. They eagerly searched every nook where ice had gathered, leaving no frozen patch unexplored. In the mud kitchen, pots and bowls were filled with ice, which they crushed and chopped with their tools, collaborating to create imaginative “ice dishes” together.

The week also brought a great deal of building and engineering in our forest. The students rolled a stump into place and balanced a board across it, proudly creating a makeshift seesaw. They took turns playing, laughing, and testing their creation, thrilled by the play structure they had built themselves.  “Loose Part Play,” as it has come to be known, has been a cornerstone of our outdoor classroom experience and, among many other benefits, encourages imaginative, self-directed play.

Our largest tree has become a particularly beloved gathering spot. The children transformed it into a cozy home, complete with an attic, bathroom, balcony, and even an electrical outlet (a small hole in the tree). Using a large stick, they propped up a doorway, then found old firewood and used charcoal to paint the door black. They warmly welcomed visitors, offering guided tours of their thoughtfully designed home.

As the week grew colder, we turned our hopes toward snow by making paper snowflakes. The students carefully folded and cut the paper, drawing their own designs before revealing the final shapes. Their faces lit up with wonder as each snowflake unfolded, beautifully unique, just like the hands that made them. It was truly a joy to witness.
