Showing, Not Telling

Sixth & Seventh Grade: November 4 - 8, 2024

Dear Middle School Families,

Our class continued with the exploration of Wonder by listening to several short stories, paragraphs, and poems rich in “showing, not telling.” The class applied this in a practical way by looking at how to move a sentence from generic to specific. It’s the specificity that helps a reader to form a picture in their mind, and it was wonderful to see how different students imagined generic sentences when tasked with the assignment of making them more specific. The class completed several short paragraphs expanding this skill and enjoyed sharing them with the class.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be reviewing and practicing parts of speech and honing grammar skills by editing several paragraphs and sentences. These paragraphs will be woven in with our study of the Silk Road and the beginning of exploration and discovery during the Middle Ages. The Silk Road evokes images of places and peoples linked by the exchange of exotic goods and fabled treasures. However, the Silk Road was also an important network of trade routes that spread religious ideas and beliefs. Communities of faith interacted, co-existed, competed, and influenced each other over long periods of time.

Finally, even though we are not in a Math Block, the afternoon math track class will continue to review math skills and introduce new concepts. We are currently working on exponents and ratios, and these, along with a review of concepts already covered, will show up regularly in homework.
