Joyful Beginnings Bluebirds: August 17-21, 2026

Dear Bluebird Families,

The beginning of the school year is a special time for children to settle in, build relationships, and become familiar with the rhythm of their new classroom. During the first week, the days are intentionally kept simple and unhurried. Rather than filling our schedule with activities, the children are given plenty of time to observe, explore, connect, and gradually feel at home in their new surroundings.

Our classroom rhythm is inspired by the gentle pace of our days and the natural rhythm of our breath. The mornings begin outdoors, giving the children an opportunity to get some fresh air, stretch their bodies, and transition from the car ride into the school day. Once everyone has had a chance to move around and warm up, our class moves indoors for singing and story time. Together, we celebrate the changing seasons, animals, the sun, and the moon through songs, movement, and stories.

Morning snack follows, giving the children an opportunity to nourish their bodies while practicing independence. They learn to eat at their own pace, clean up after themselves, and care for their belongings. Before we eat, we bless our food and light our candle, welcoming our “fire fairy” into the room. The class then enjoys snack together in a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. When finished, the children have time for indoor creative play.  Later in the morning, we transition back outside to move our bodies, explore, and connect with nature. The forest is a wonderful and calming place for young children, offering endless opportunities for discovery, imagination, and play.

Throughout the year, there are simple phrases used to help guide the children as they learn to care for themselves, one another, and their environment.

  • “Gentle hands” – reminding children to treat their friends, themselves, and their surroundings with care.

  • “Kind words” – encouraging children to speak respectfully and thoughtfully to one another and to themselves.

  • “Strong hands, steady feet” – encouraging safe and mindful movement during transitions, especially when holding onto the “mousy ear” and carrying baskets.

  • “Walking feet, quiet voices” – encouraging calm and peaceful movement in the indoor classroom.

  • “Quiet snack” – helping children slow down, listen to their bodies, and enjoy a wholesome snack mindfully.

If you would like, using these same phrases at home can provide your child with a wonderful sense of consistency and familiarity as they continue to grow into their classroom rhythm. Additionally, please help your child practice carrying their basket at home. This will help them feel more comfortable and confident carrying it independently at school, a skill that will develop in the coming weeks

As the children continue to settle into their new school environment, we will introduce our first watercolor painting this week, using a warm golden yellow. Mr. Brush will also make his special return to welcome our returning Bluebirds and greet our new friends as we begin this new journey together. This Friday, the class will celebrate Rihana’s birthday. We are excited to spend this special day with her and her family!
