Dear Second and Third Grade Families,
Thank you for coming out to volunteer at our class workday on Saturday! Each smiling face and pair of helping hands were appreciated. You truly embody our school’s commitment to building a strong community. Like you, your children have a will to help and make a difference. Each week, as in all Waldorf classrooms, students work hard to make their environment beautiful and neat during Friday class clean-up. While refreshing their space, students develop their will force, persevering at varied tasks: sweeping and dusting; watering plants and arranging items on the nature shelf; and sharpening pencils and cleaning crayons. The children improve their self-esteem through this meaningful work in which they take great pride.
In a similar vein, students have been applying themselves with admirable work ethic to the main lesson each day, including during their morning circle. Upon arrival, students set their intention for the day as they utter in unison the morning verse, after which they learn of the day’s schedule and walk together to their circle space in the forest. During circle, students recite poetry, sing, engage in movement, and practice skills such as phonics and math. The first two weeks of school found the class learning the poem “Summer” by Victorian poet Christina Rossetti, a traditional song about summer sung in rounds, and a longways set dance to the tune “The Chimes of Dunkirk.” The meditative poem, rich in nature imagery, required full involvement and concentration from each child. The playful mood of the summer song invited the class to listen closely and enjoy the sound of their voices weaving together, while the lively dance brought energy and movement to the room. These pieces provided avenues down which the children were able to journey as a group, getting to know one another through joyful movement and raising their voices together.
Class Reminders and Announcements:
Please send a reading challenge book to school with your child. It can stay at school until they finish or travel back and forth between home and school for reading continuity.
Parent Conferences are October 8 and 9! Please sign up here to schedule a time to meet.
Conferences are for adults only and are an opportunity to come together to talk about your child’s experiences at school, celebrate their growth, and share any questions, observations, or concerns.
