Second & Third Grade: February 23-27, 2026

Hello Second and Third Grade Families,

Last week, we continued our Fables Around the World unit with Borreguita and the Coyote and The Rabbit’s Tale from Brazil. Alongside these stories, lessons focused on grammar skills. Students learned about parts of speech, with special attention to prepositions and conjunctions, and practiced punctuation, particularly the correct use of commas.

The class also reviewed spelling rules and patterns. They spent time practicing “trick” words such as friend, pizza, and could. These words do not follow typical phonetic rules, and students enjoyed discovering that they are not simply “rule breakers.” Instead, many of them have changed over time as they came from other languages. For example, friend comes from the Old English pronunciation fri-ond, which is why it is spelled with an I and not just an E, and pizza is spelled with two z’s because that reflects the Italian spelling for the /ts/ sound. Making these connections between spelling and language history has paired beautifully with our exploration of the cultures around the world, and students are beginning to see how language and culture are connected.

This week concludes our block with stories from Kenya, Haiti, and Scotland. The class will also review the parts of a sentence, as well as skills practiced throughout this block.
