Kindergarten Chickadees: January 26 - 30, 2026

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

The students found immense joy in ice play last week!  There was ice in nearly every bucket, wheelbarrow, and other container on Tuesday, and gasps of excitement rang through the forest classroom as the children discovered these treasures. They broke the ice with sticks and shovels, looked through it, traded it, created mud kitchen meals, and conducted various experiments with their blocks of ice. On a walk across campus, students noticed that the pond was filled with ice, and many shared stories about ice they saw at home or on their way to school. The frozen ground was another challenge that the children enjoyed as they tried to figure out how to dig holes. Eventually, they ended up chipping away at the hard mud in tiny pieces. It was a fun experience, and the activity kept the students warm as they worked.

The Chickadees are enjoying the story of Brigit of Imbolc and have begun creating puppet shows from the story. Their favorite characters are a sister and brother, Brigit and Michael, who go on a mission to find a holy well and ensure every villager is cared for. The children decided to take on this mission after the goddess of Imbolc, also named Brigit, told them this would bring springtime. Ask your child to share the story with you! This week, we will act out the story in a play. On Wednesday, the class will share a special snack of colcannon (mashed potatoes and cabbage) and bannock bread (a simple fried flat bread). Both recipes will be made vegan. These traditional Irish foods are often eaten to celebrate Imbolc, the halfway point between winter and spring.

Announcements & Reminders:

Golden Knights Homework: Golden Knights practiced tying and untying knots during handwork last Wednesday. They brought their piece of yarn home with them and should practice tying knots until the string is too short to continue tying, and then untying all of the knots. Once they can tie and until all of the knots themselves, they are knot masters! Even knot masters should continue to practice, as this activity strengthens fingers and builds finger isolation, important skills needed for writing and drawing in First Grade.
