Kindergarten Chickadees: February 9-13, 2026
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
The Chickadee class had a lot of fun celebrating the Lunar New Year last week. The children heard a story about Nian, the monster from the sea who scared a village in China each year, and a mysterious visitor who taught them how to scare Nian away using the color red, light, and loud sounds. On Monday, students drew using only red stick and block crayons to scare Nian. On Tuesday, they painted with red paint as they imagined living in the village and decorating their homes, dressing up, and lighting lanterns and fireworks to keep Nian away. As they played throughout the week, the students banged on pots and pans to scare away the monster. On Wednesday, students took home their artwork and celebrated the New Year with tangerines and vegan dumplings to bring good luck in the coming year. Nearly every student tried a dumpling, and most enjoyed them so much they asked for seconds!
The rain last Wednesday led to joyful mud play as the children created soups, pies, and deep holes that hid Nian and other creatures, made from small shovels and sticks. By the end of the day, Honey Mountain became a slippery slide that some students found great fun in sliding down.
When we return from the break, the students will begin working on their portion of the Chickadee auction project. They will use green, brown, and blue felt of varying hues to create a play mat for the Garden School Play Farm. Once the mat is complete, the class will work together to wet-felt a replica of the large boulder they enjoy climbing on at the farm. Along with wet felting, the class will begin taking more nature walks. Students who are interested in more handwork and structured projects will have the opportunity to sew stuffed animals and baby dolls, while younger students will do more finger knitting before moving on to sewing.
We hope you had a fun and rejuvenating break. We enjoyed seeing your incredible children back in class.
