Kindergarten Honeybees: February 9-13, 2026

Dear Honeybee Families,

This past week truly felt like spring was in the air. The birds were chirping more than usual, and the orchestra of frogs in the pond could be heard all the way from our picnic tables.

The children were busy bees in the forest, deconstructing and constructing new structures. The house they had worked so hard to build was relocated by a nearby tree and transformed into a boathouse. Together, students carried large sticks, propping them against the tree. A windshield and steering wheel for the captain were added, and one child even found a perfectly hook-shaped branch to use as an anchor. Jump ropes were tied across the space, and silks and cloth were used to create walls. Such self-directed, imaginative play is a cornerstone of Waldorf early childhood education. Through open-ended materials and cooperative work, the children strengthen their creativity, problem-solving abilities, physical coordination, and social skills.

Some children were in a planting mood and carefully transplanted newly sprouted grasses from around the forest into our vegetable garden. They collected sticks to form a boundary, diligently guarded their garden, and continued adding new plants throughout the week. We hope to harvest our arugula soon and plant some flowers for the spring.

We also enjoyed handwork and crafting. Students continue to eagerly work on their handwork projects- creating cats, faeries, ladybugs, and more. It’s a joy to watch them gain confidence in handling the needle and wanting to work on their craft as soon as they enter the classroom. The children also made cards by tracing and cutting out hearts, then gluing them onto their cards. Some chose to dictate a special note to a loved one. We created bookmarks as well, using finger-knitted chains and sewing on a burlap heart with each child’s embroidered initial. Handwork in the early years supports fine motor development, concentration, and a sense of capability while nurturing the will forces.

Hope you had a wonderful mid-winter break!
