Kindergarten Chickadees: August 25-29, 2025

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

Thank you for joining us at the Spring 2025 Curriculum Night!  It was wonderful to see so many families and share about the rhythm of our days and weeks, the importance of nature-placed, play-based early education, and cover some basic ways we can partner in your child’s education and wellbeing.

The tall dirt hill at the edge of the forest classroom has been named “Hhoney Mmountain” by the students. This hill is used for harvesting “honey” for sharing and baking in the mud kitchen, gathering dirt for building projects, and as a gathering place for groups working and playing together. On Thursday, some students gathered large sticks and branches and used them to construct a road for dump trucks to follow to and from Honey Mountain. The children are already getting to know each other well and play cooperatively in these and other activities. The ability to communicate with others and work cooperatively significantly impacts social and academic success throughout life; it's wonderful that children have the opportunity to develop these skills in a way that works best: by playing outdoors!

Over the first weeks of school, students heard the story of Little Sand Friend, who was usually a bit nervous and liked to hide under her sand brothers and sisters. One day, just before the full moon, she was swept by a strong current and carried into the big Ocean, which frightened her. Just as she was about to call out for help, Sand Friend gently landed in a dark, safe cave. Great Mother, to whom the cave was home, cared for Sand Friend and covered her with light, silky, soft sheets whenever she awoke and was afraid. Finally, Sand Friend woke to find that Great Mother had sent a new friend to care for her and help her feel safe in the big, wide Ocean. Ask your child to tell you the rest of the story!  They enjoyed the story as a puppet show last week, and the class will begin a new story this week.
