Second & Third Grade: August 25-29, 2025
Dear Second and Third Grade Families,
Last week, we concluded our farming block with a study of commercial, organic, regenerative, and vertical farms, as well as our school farm. The children discussed the benefits of each type of farm. For example, commercial farms provide food for large populations, organic farms offer natural alternatives to conventional pesticides, and regenerative farms mimic the earth’s natural methods of growing plants. The children also enjoyed sharing about their home gardens, and many were excited to discover that they already practice organic and regenerative farming methods. As a special treat, the children delighted in a shared snack from grown Melanie’s home garden: fig jam and crackers. Thank you to Melanie for bringing in the delicious figs!
This week, we are beginning our second block, Heroes and Noble People. Hearing stories such as those of saints and other historical figures is a traditional practice in Second Grade Waldorf classrooms, as these stories weave lessons of moral understanding, compassion, and generosity through tales of human kindness. In addition to stories of saints, students will learn about more modern heroes —people who demonstrated courage in the face of hardship and adversity, as well as perseverance in arduous tasks. These include the figures of Martin Luther King Jr., Claudette Colvin, Emma Tenayuca, and many more. In preparation for the Day of Courage, which has specific significance for our Third Grade students, we will open with the story of Saint George and the Dragon, which introduces the central theme of the block: courage.
I look forward to talking with you all tomorrow night at our Curriculum Night. We will meet in our indoor classroom from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.
