Kindergarten Chickadees: September 8 - 12, 2025

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

Several students have been making use of the paper and crayons on the platform to create maps to follow or give to others. These maps involve varying degrees of detail and lead the reader to treasures both real (nature treasures) and imaginary. Map-making and following is an important element of forest schooling and nature education, as children have a natural desire to explore their local geography and develop a sense of place. As children grow older, the foundations they built by following their natural instinct to engage in these activities, afforded by a longer period of unstructured play, will develop into both an interest in geography and a care and respect for the land they live on. Along with maps, students have been enjoying making several crafts, including the bead and lemon-drop necklaces, shooting stars, and god's eyes. These crafts build hand-eye coordination, hand strength and movement, patience, and the ability to follow directions.

The first weeks of school have also included a lot of fun and games!  The children have done an incredible job of playing cooperatively, creating various creative, active games to play together. You may have heard about some of these games at home, such as Super T-Rex, Ghost Pigs, and Tiger Stripe. The children have also enjoyed running races, and it is a joy to watch them all cheer on every student participating with equal excitement and appreciation. Additionally, the students showed the tricks they have learned on the climbing dome. They are proud of their skills, and their strength and balance are growing daily through these activities, morning circle, and Thursday yoga.
