Middle School: September 8-12, 2025

Hello, Middle School Families,

This past week, the class dived into Meteorology with gusto. To each Main Lesson, students brought their curiosity - we often ended the lecture with engaging and thoughtful questions about the atmosphere we live in.

Through an exploration of weather, students learned about the water cycle and the formation of clouds. The class learned about the various types of clouds and spent last week identifying clouds observed in the sky. Fair, steady weather met us during the week, so while we didn’t see much variation in the cloud types, students ended the week feeling confident about their cloud identification skills. The class spent a morning painting various clouds using wet-on-wet painting and the negative technique, as well as their watercolor pencils. These resulted in quite beautiful renderings of the clouds.

One of the most fun discussions the class had this week was about the various layers of the atmosphere. Students had many questions about what happens in each location of the atmosphere - asking: where is the weather, where do planes fly, where does sky diving happen, where are satellites,  meteor showers, or the aurora borealis located. They come to Main Lesson each morning excited and eager with more questions!

The class rounded out the week with an Egg Drop Challenge to culminate the Physics Block. Students worked on designing a contraption that would hold an egg and allow it to land safely on the ground without cracking. Designs were quite innovative and varied - several were successful even at great heights, and there was much excitement when an egg cracked. Way to go, Middle School!
