Kindergarten Honeybees: September 8-12, 2025
Dear Honeybee Families,
We had a shorter but full week last week in our Honeybees’ forest class. The students worked on simple handwork activities that help develop their fine motor skills and also nurture a sense of wonder. They wrapped yarn around a piece of cardboard and cut the yarn loops, magically creating colorful, flower-like pom-poms. Students delighted to find tucked away inside their craft bags, the woolly butterflies their parents made for them during Curriculum Night, and they enjoyed crafting butterflies of their very own as well. On Tuesday, students watercolor painted with blue, one of the three primary colors we will work with over the course of the year. This week, we will explore the magic of what happens when two colors meet.
While at the creek, we discovered a vast root system weaving out from the forest trees, where the earth was parted by the water’s path. The children examined it with amazement. It’s incredible to see a little piece of what the world looks like beneath our feet. In our outdoor classroom, the trees have showered the forest floor with pinecones. We have begun collecting pinecones for future projects and kindling. Autumn is right around the corner, and we experience it by the sounds of migrating geese flying above us, the sight of grackles in the morning flying in beautiful unison, and, of course, the change of leaves.
The story we shared was about an oak tree whose leaves were slowly turning from green to yellow, red, and orange. Each day, some of the leaves were picked up by the wind and carried on an adventure. All but one little leaf, which remained green. The little green leaf looked at itself and wondered to Old Father Oak, “What’s wrong with me?” Father Oak reassured the little leaf that there is nothing wrong with it; it is indeed a very good leaf and only needs patience and time. The little leaf trusted Father Oak and waited patiently each day. Sure enough, in its own time, the little leaf received its colors, revealing brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, and was thus carried on an adventure of its own.
