Kindergarten Chickadees: September 8-12, 2025

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

The Chickadee students enjoyed a new activity last week, as we opened the classroom sandbox for the first time this year!  Sand provides the students with a different type of sensory play, and the children work together differently in the smaller space compared to Honey Mountain or the other larger digging and building areas of the forest classroom. So far, the students are all enjoying taking turns in this exciting new option. Students also began their first craft activity of the school year. The children used a dull tapestry needle to thread beads and dyed wool “lemon drops” onto dyed wool yarn. They then took their creations home as their choice of necklaces or hanging decorations. Students who did not finish last week will have the opportunity to bring theirs home this week.

The Chickadees are starting a second craft this week, as well! The children will use one of their yellow paintings to cut and tie ribbons on, making it a magical “shooting star”. The stars will help the students remember to be kind and have courage.  Following the theme of courage, this week the students will experience a daily puppet show based on last week’s story, a secular Michaelmas (Day of Courage) tale. The students listened with rapt attention as a dragon appeared outside a village, frightening the villagers and consuming all the plants. Finally, the bravest person in the village, Michael, is asked to slay the dragon. He agrees to speak to the dragon, who expresses that he doesn’t mean to scare the villagers and is only lonely and wants to play with the children. One brave girl steps forward to greet the dragon, and a heartwarming adventure unfurls.
