Kindergarten Turtles: September 8-12, 2025

Greetings, Turtle Families,

The Turtles had a busy, short week. We spent the morning at the creek on Tuesday and Friday. Please remember to check your child’s backpack for wet clothes each day and to pack a new change of clothes, in a bag labeled with their name, when they bring wet clothes home. On Wednesday, the children made pom-poms. This is a fun handwork activity that is easy to try at home as well. Each child chose a small ball of yarn and carefully wrapped it around a cardboard loom (see picture below) until all the yarn was used. The teachers then tied the yarn in the center and helped remove it from the loom. Next came the fun part, the children cut the loops and gave their pom-pom a “haircut”. This part required patience and focus. Cutting yarn is not easy, and each child experimented with how to hold their scissors and position their hands until they found a technique that worked for them. It was a joy to watch their concentration and determination. On Thursday, we colored in our drawing journals, and the students were delighted to find the surprise drawings inside made by their parent(s) on Curriculum Night..  Building with our large wood loose parts is becoming a favorite activity in the forest, and the structures they build are impressive! It is lovely to observe the children involved in creative and imaginative activities as they gain confidence in themselves and trust in each other as they play.

We will be naturally dyeing cloth later in September. To do this, we need flowers. If you have marigold flowers you could share with us, we would love to have them (just the flower head). Also, if you can harvest any goldenrod, a yellow wildflower often found growing wild along the road or trails, we would appreciate that too. Please send any marigolds or goldenrod in by 9/15.
