Second & Third Grade: November 3 - 7, 2025
Hello Second and Third Grade Families,
Today we took our first field trip to Mercier Orchards! The children toured the farm, enjoyed apple cider, took a tractor ride, and admired the scenic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This was the first outing for the Second Graders, and it was a fun experience for the entire class. We look forward to more trips in the future!
Last week, we began our fourth block, which covers Native American stories and legends with a focus on the Cherokee people. The children enjoyed learning about Cherokee culture, language, and stories. They have learned about Cherokee dwellings, the different roles of community members, and received an introduction to the ceremonies and sports in this community. They even practiced speaking some words in Cherokee! The children also heard the stories The First Fire and Uktena the Serpent.
This block is accompanied by the practice of multiplication skills. The children worked in small groups, solving multiplication problems together and independently. Each student was given a bag of 50 gems to help them solve the equations. The Second Grade students are enjoying the use of manipulatives to help them understand that multiplication means making equal groups. The Third Graders are beginning to solve their problems both without manipulatives and by memory. All students are progressing well in their math studies!
The cooler temperatures allowed us to enjoy a fire in our class fire pit in place of Creekcess. The children created the fire together and then attempted to cook a pizza over the flames. It was a wonderful bonding experience for all of the children. In the upcoming weeks, we will likely have a firepit on Fridays. Children are allowed to bring one item to attempt to roast on the fire. Please, only send in enough for your child as we have allergies in the class and cannot share.
