Fourth & Fifth Grade: November 17 - 21, 2025

Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,

Thank you so much for attending the Grades Performance and the Thanksgiving Luncheon. The students were excited to showcase what they’ve been working on over the past few months, as well as having lunch (and dessert!) with you. Your support was greatly appreciated!

Before the class parted ways for break, we wrapped up the final week of our North American Geography block. After learning about Canada the previous week, we ventured south of the U.S. border to explore Mexico’s geography. Many students noticed that the Sonoran Desert, which lies in the American Southwest, continues into northern Mexico, where it meets another desert, the Chihuahuan, which also extends into a portion of the U.S. (western Texas). It was wonderful to see them connect this to what they learned back in August during part one of our North American Geography block.

The class also completed their research projects on their assigned Central American or Caribbean countries. Students created their own posters and wrote essays about their country’s geographical landscape, local wildlife and plants, and additional cultural facts. A common connection among the countries was the similarity in agriculture, physical geography, and climate, as all of the nations are located in a tropical region of the world.

In math, the class continued with Mayan Mathematics. When first introduced to the topic, they learned only the numbers 0–29. This time, we expanded to 70. Their objective was to look for patterns and determine how to write the numbers 71–100. It was a meaningful challenge that combined mathematics with an ancient writing system. In addition, the class completed a review of the math topics we’ve studied over the last two months: long multiplication and division, as well as adding and subtracting negative numbers.

For the month of December, the class will begin a new block, Ancient Greece, alongside the Sixth Grade students. We are really looking forward to this one! This will be their first opportunity to explore the historical significance of the Olympic Games and connect it to their Pentathlon training, which has already begun.
