Second & Third Grade: November 17 - 21, 2025
Hello Second and Third Grade Families,
Thank you for attending our Thanksgiving program and picnic before the break. The children worked hard to learn their songs and memorize their poem. We hope you enjoyed your time off and that you were able to spend it with family and friends.
Before the break, the class spent the week exploring the connection between multiplication and division. By breaking down equations such as 3 x 4 = 12, we then looked at 12 ÷ 4 = 3. The children placed these equations into fact families and were able to solve more challenging division problems, such as 56 ÷ 8 = 7, by using their knowledge of multiplication, in this case, of 7 x 8 = 56. Students used a variety of tools to solve these problems, including multiplication charts, gemstones, drawings, and their growing memory skills. Each one has made steady progress in understanding multiplication and division over the past three weeks, and should feel proud of their hard work.
Before the break, we also spent time reading our new chapter book, The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes. This story follows a Second grade boy over the course of a year and reflects many of the situations our own class experiences, including disagreements with friends, anxiety about presenting a class project, and conflicts with younger siblings. The book has been an excellent starting point for class discussions about resolving conflicts with kindness. It is always a joyful moment for a teacher when you finish a chapter, and the class asks, “Can we read one more chapter, please?”

Next week’s tours are designed to meet your questions about the next phase of your child’s development and how the curriculum meets the changes you are starting to see now. A Kindergarten tour and a Grades tour will be offered on Wednesday, December 10th, at 9:30 am and Saturday, December 13th, at 10:00 am.
