Kindergarten Chickadees: August 18-22, 2025
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
The Chickadee students enjoyed various weather and outdoor activities at school this week. Sun, rain, and mud all brought unique forms of play and learning, including building blanket forts, cooking in the mud kitchen, searching for caterpillars, and
experimenting with different types of dirt and clay as they dug a large hole. The class had its first “creekcess” on Tuesday, where the children played peacefully together in the shallow creek, gathering special gems (rocks), building sand castles, and digging streams and trenches. A quiet listening exercise in the forest and a trip to visit the animals at the farm added to the students’ outdoor experience at the end of the week. There were many exclamations of wonder at the various butterflies floating around campus and the caterpillars crawling around.
Students began their drawings for the semester last week. The students are working toward building the capacity to draw quietly for ten minutes. Children are free to draw anything they like, using stick crayons of any colors they choose. When a child says they are done before ten minutes, we encourage them to add more details, or colors, or draw on the other side of their paper. After ten minutes, students are free to take care of their crayons and papers or continue drawing. Many of the older students were successfully drawing quietly for the entire time, and most were excited to show off their work when they were finished. It will be a joy to watch them blossom in their love for creative expression.
