Second & Third Grade: August 18-22, 2025
Dear Second and Third Grade Families,
In our second week of school, we continued our study of life on the farm. The children learned about the year on the farm and how different seasons affect the crops that are grown and the work that is done. They also learned about arable farms, or farms that grow crops, livestock farms, subsistence farms, and flower farms. In addition, time was spent practicing additional spelling patterns and rules. An impromptu question led to the discovery of when to use a ‘c’ versus using a ‘k’ at the beginning of a word. The rule is to use a C if an A, U, or O follows, and to use a K if an E or I follows. The long vowel spelling patterns for A and E were also introduced. This practice allowed the students to begin writing words such as compost, cattle, kitten, hay, grain, and sheep.
Last week, several students completed their first handwork project of the year, a small pillow filled with different teas, flowers, and spices. For the students who are new to the school, this was their first handwork project, and they were very excited to share their hard work with their families. If you would like to enhance the smell of the pillow, you can place it in a microwave for 15 seconds to bring out the scents!
Next week, the children will conclude their farming block by learning about commercial, industrial, organic, regenerative, vertical, hydroponic, and urban farms. We will spend the final day of our block learning about our school farm, how it has grown over the years, and hear some stories from the farm written by the older students who took care of the farm in years past.
