First Grade: January 13 - 17, 2025
Dear First Grade Families,
Our Math Block is in full swing, with the children enjoying abundant active learning to gain number sense and a beginning understanding of arithmetic. For example, students are mastering counting by twos (to 24 and back again) through activities such as partner bean bag toss, walking and hopping along a number line, and walking the balance beam. During Main Lesson, the class works through story word problems orally and in their Main Lesson books with playful illustrations. They love meeting the four gnome characters at the center of this block’s stories. In addition to the phlegmatic Pearl Plus, students have now been introduced to Micah Minus, who wears blue and is of melancholic temperament. Each temperament is aligned with a particular element. The phlegmatic temperament is connected to water, the melancholy to earth. Micah Minus feels things very deeply and takes pleasure in giving her time and treasures to others! The third gnome is the quick-moving and fun-loving Tommy Times, who is sanguine, wears yellow, and is associated with the air. This character delights in busily bouncing around and multiplying!
This week, the class has met Drake Divide, a choleric gnome who wears red and whose temperament reflects the qualities of fire. Drake Divide is always fair and just in his organization, treasures, and provisions, ensuring equal shares. The children are excited to have learned about all four math processes.
We look forward to seeing you all at our Spring Grades Curriculum night on Wednesday, January 22nd, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. We will start the night with a short meeting to brainstorm ideas for our Hope Blooms class auction project. Following this, you are all invited to visit with our Specialty teachers to learn more about each class. We look forward to your support and attendance.
