Second & Third Grade: February 10 - 14, 2025
Hello, Second and Third Grade Families,
Before the break, we continued our study of measurement by looking at volume and weight. On Monday, the children were asked to empty a bucket of water using different types of cups and to record how many cups of water the bucket contained. Using the largest cup, the bucket contained 8 cups of water, and using the smallest cup, the bucket contained 19 cups of water. The children found it humorous to attempt to count how many spoonfuls of water the bucket contained, and they found that when measuring with buckets, it measured one. The class discussed what would happen if they attempted to follow a recipe using any ‘cup’ to measure their ingredients. The consensus was that the final result likely wouldn’t taste very good.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the children explored measurement through weight. They first compared objects' weights using their arms before they were allowed to weigh using a scale. After comparing different objects, the children used an electric scale to weigh different objects in the classroom. They were challenged to find something that weighed exactly one ounce and something that weighed exactly one pound. They found that a pencil weighs nearly an ounce, and 16 paint brushes weigh nearly a pound. They then estimated how many pencils it would take to equal the weight of the 16 paintbrushes.
On Friday, the class used what they had learned about length, volume, and mass to bake Valentine's cookies. The children were excited to not only put what they had learned to practical use but to enjoy a sweet treat in celebration of the holiday.
This week, the children will begin learning about time and how it is a form of measurement. The children will review telling time using an analog clock as well as create a sundial. We will also look at different sand timers and other ways to tell time.
