Joyful Beginnings Hummingbirds: January 21 - 24, 2025
Dear Joyful Beginnings Hummingbird Families,
Per the weather, the Hummingbirds have been enjoying extra time indoors in the mornings. This time has been spent quietly and sweetly. In the classroom last week, children were seen rocking in the rocking chair, reading books with teachers and friends, making “wind” and capes out of silk, painting, and caring for baby dolls. With a slight shift in rhythm, we were also able to enjoy a few prolonged nature walks in the sun to keep our bodies moving in the colder weather. We explored new paths around our campus, and some children sweetly exclaimed, “Sherman took us to a new forest!” On Wednesday and Thursday, we painted with bright sunshiny yellow and heard a short story about the warmth and power of the sun on blustery days.
Last week, we also began to prepare the children more concretely for our upcoming classroom transitions. The children were delighted to find that they were characters in our story about the seed and the star child! The story was well received. Children made their understanding known by stating things like “I can’t believe the baby is almost here!” or pointing out Ki Pri to their parents at pick up and letting them know that “It’s almost time for Ki Pri to come to school!” Ki Pri has also been able to shadow our class in recent days, and the children are more than comfortable and familiar with her presence in the class. We are so proud of our sweet Hummingbirds and so grateful to have such a wonderful school community to make these transitions so seamless.
Included below is a portion of our current winter circle that has become a class favorite:
Trees are bare everywhere
Snows are deep and skies are gray
Yet one bird may be heard on the coldest day
Ask his name and he'll reply
Cocking up a roguish eye
"Chick-a-dee, chick-a-dee, chick-a-dee-dee-dee."
