Kindergarten Chickadees: April 28 - May 2, 2025
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
Last week, the class was surprised to find a Carolina Wren nest built in a student’s handwork basket! The students also saw caterpillars and eggs on a plant stalk and under the leaves. The flower and vegetable seeds the children planted the previous week had already sprouted, and the students tried guessing which sprouts would be flowers and which would be lettuce. Each student received a seed starter flat, which they filled with potting soil. The students planted two seeds in each spot, adding a row of kale, one of spinach, one of marigolds, and one of zinnias. Please keep these seeds in a sunny spot with moist soil for a week, and they should sprout soon! Once sprouted, the seeds can be planted in the ground, planters, or pots. Along with plants and animals, the students experienced the joy of mud after a spring shower. Children made boats to float and push in the larger puddles, scooped water for cooking in the mud kitchen, and transported it in the wheelbarrow.
This week, students will have the opportunity to play in the creek. They will also take a nature walk, visit the farm, and continue caring for the growing seedlings in our classroom. Students will make the covers for their semester drawing books on drawing day, and on painting day, they will create covers for their painting books. Over the next two weeks, the class will hear and act out a special therapeutic story intended to help the children ease into the transition of some students rising to First grade and others continuing in kindergarten next school year. The story will conclude with a beautiful ceremony for the Golden Knights, which the students will observe together.
Announcements and Reminders for Chickadee Kindergarten:
Please send your child with insect repellent in their backpacks. The mosquitoes have returned.
We will be going to the creek this week, weather permitting. If you have not already done so, please send your child with hard-soled, closed-toed creek shoes. These can be old tennis shoes you do not mind getting wet; rain boots are not advised, as they fill with water. Students who do not have shoes for the creek will play in the dry, sandy area.
