Fourth & Fifth Grade: April 28 - May 2, 2025

Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,

Last week, the class embarked on their final Main Lesson block of the year: Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. Students traveled back in time to the cradle of civilization, where they explored the rich history of Mesopotamia—the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Through stories, illustrations, and discussion, they learned about ziggurats, early systems of irrigation, the invention of cuneiform writing, and the daily life and innovations of the Sumerians and Babylonians. Students were especially intrigued by the idea that so many of our modern systems—from written language to government and agriculture—can trace their roots back to this ancient world.

In addition to our academic focus, the class continued their work on the upcoming play. Students collaborated on set design, helped create props, and supported each other in memorizing lines and developing their characters. Due to several students being under the weather, the performance is rescheduled for Friday, May 16—this extra time will allow the students to shine even brighter on stage.

This week, the class had the special opportunity to attend their final field trip of the year—a visit to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. It was a beautiful and enriching experience. Students were captivated by the live music and the way the instruments blended to tell a story without words. They learned how composers use tempo, dynamics, and melody to evoke emotion and were fascinated by the conductor’s role in bringing everything to life. Several students commented on how powerful and moving the performance felt, and it was a wonderful way to close our field trip adventures for the year.

Back in the classroom, we are continuing our journey through Mesopotamia and will be transitioning into Ancient Egypt by the end of the week. Students will begin to discover the mysteries of the Nile River, the significance of pyramids, and the spiritual and cultural practices of this enduring civilization.

As always, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm.
