Second & Third Grade: March 3 - 7, 2025
Hello, Second and Third Grade Families,
Last week, the children were proud to show off the hard work they put into their book dioramas. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for presentations. Thank you also for the dishes you brought in to accompany the presentations. It was a fun time spent as a community!
In addition to completing their projects, the class completed their measurement block with a week-long study of money. The children looked at currency from around the world, learned about trade and bartering, and took a deeper look into U.S. currency. On Tuesday and Wednesday, each child created an imaginary shop and practiced their addition and subtraction skills as they sold objects, such as pet supplies, candies, books, and toys, to each other. On Thursday, the children were given a budget and were challenged to purchase a house, transportation, food, and entertainment. Some children quickly ran out of money as they opted to purchase a mansion, while others were proud of how much money they were able to have still in their “bank” at the end of the lesson.
This week, we are beginning our fibers block. This block teaches the children about fibers such as wool, cotton, silk, and flax. The class will have many hands-on experiences during this block, including a visit to AB Farm on March 28! We are beginning with a look at silk, and the students are especially excited to have a new class pet: 25 silk worms which will live in our classroom over the next four weeks. The children will be in charge of feeding and maintaining their habitat, and soon they should experience the worms spinning cocoons, which is the resource that is used to create silk.
