First Grade: March 3 - 7, 2025
Dear First Grade Families,
Thank you for your support and enthusiasm for our Read Across America book projects last Friday! The class was all fired up about their visual and culinary representations of their chosen books. Students’ willingness and ability to present their responses to their titles did them credit. It was really encouraging! Friday was special in more ways than one, as it marked Finley’s seventh birthday and celebration. Happy birthday, Finley! The class looks forward to celebrating the remaining seventh birthdays in due course; eighth birthday celebrations will follow in Second Grade!
During the lead-up to Friday's event, the class enjoyed further developing and then finalizing their dioramas. They participated in other book-related activities, such as writing and illustrating their responses to a Dr. Seuss book. The children also enjoyed assuming a character from their respective project books and being interviewed by the class. Each child’s answers revealed their understanding of the characters, plot sequence, and setting of their chosen text. In other news, buddy time with Seventh Grade has been scaled back to a biweekly schedule, and the pairs/trios are working on little books about each other complete with portraits. During these lessons, students are practicing speaking and listening by gathering information and impressions about their buddies before committing them to paper. The books will be a sweet memento of the time the children shared together this year.
Next week, the final week of this Language Arts block will see students adding to their mental bank of sight words and working with Elkonin sound boxes to sound out CVC words.
