Kindergarten Turtles: March 10-14, 2025

Greetings, Turtle Families,

We had such a busy week in the forest! The week started with a rainy and chilly day. There was plenty of rainwater to mix in with the dirt to make lots and lots of mud. The children used the mud to create many mud kitchen items, to paint the trucks, the stumps, and the wheelbarrow, and to make big piles of dirt that added to their forts and obstacle courses. The rain, mud, and water are a delightful sensory experience for the students.

We began work on our auction project in class. On Tuesday, we worked on a collaborative drawing project, and on Thursday, we painted in the same fashion. During each of these sessions, the children drew or painted in small groups. Each child was given a paper and a limited palette of colors (red and orange), (green and yellow), (blue and purple). Each child drew or painted for a while with the colors provided. Next, the students rotated to a different paper with a different palette and began working on the art that a classmate had begun. We then rotated a final time so that each student had the opportunity to add to the art in all three color palettes. During painting, the children were very focused on mixing the two primary colors in varying proportions to create as many secondary and tertiary colors as possible. It was fun to see them create these beautiful masterpieces together!

Ki Derek visited our class to add a bit of safety and boundary to the very deep hole the children have been digging for weeks. All of the children gathered around to watch him work. They watched intently as he used an axe, an electric saw, and a drill. It was very exciting and entertaining. After he left, their play was an imitation of what they had seen, with lots of hammering, drilling, and sawing throughout the forest. Imitation is an important part of growth and development in the first seven years. Watching the adults around them complete tasks worthy of imitation and then imagining and creating similar tasks in their play is an important element of childhood that leads to happy, active, and industrious students.

Thank you to the Turtle families who came to help with the auction project on Saturday. It is coming along, and we can’t wait to see and hear the finished product. We are looking forward to having your help in class this week!

Announcements and Reminders for the Turtle Kindergarten:

Spring is coming! The mornings have been cold, but the afternoons have been beautiful, sunny, and warm, and the children have enjoyed the warmer weather. Several children have asked, “When can we go to the creek?” Creek days are quickly approaching. Please send in close-toed, hard-soled water shoes so we are prepared when the water is warm enough.
