Joyful Beginnings Hummingbirds: March 17-21, 2025
Dear Joyful Beginnings Hummingbird Families,
We welcomed Lady Spring with a new circle time song and the story "Little Seed’s Helpers." The children are sensing the changes around them as they listen in awe to the Water Fairy, Root Gnome, Wind Fairies, and Sun Sprites helping the little seed grow into a beautiful plant. Though the official first day of Spring brought some chilly temperatures, we're eager for the forest to turn lush and green and for the arrival of many flowers, birds, and other forest friends.
Wake up, wake up, you sleepy heads.
It’s time to rise out of your dreaming beds.
Take hold, take hold with little roots,
It’s time to rise up to become little shoots.
Rise up your stem and leaves,
Stretch yourself and bend in the breeze.
Welcome, welcome dear blossom bright.
Shine your colors in the sweet sunlight!
We’ve seen some exciting changes in the children’s physical movements - growing confidence in their abilities and exploring new activities. They’re staying active and engaged, whether it’s raking, digging, hanging from the strong vine, walking the balance beam, or simply running around! They helped us dig a small trench and moved branches to create the balance beam. It’s been a fun project, and now they have the chance to test their balance and coordination!
The Hummingbirds also gave us a music concert using inverted pots, spoons, and shovels. For a few moments, the entire forest came alive with their rhythm and energy. What a delightful time of year!
We’ve also observed the children enjoying each other’s company more and sharing hugs. Since the Sense of Touch is considered the ‘Foundational Sense,’ according to Rudolf Steiner, we understand and respect their need for connection. Touch also helps them understand physical boundaries. Many children find comfort in ‘firm pressure’ touch, as it reassures them that they are safe and supported. One activity we enjoy at school is the blanket cocoon or burrito game, where we apply firm pressure, and the children absolutely love it! Some fun ways to incorporate touch into daily rituals at home include snuggles and cuddles during wake-up time and bedtime, giving big bear hugs, wrapping up in blankets, rolling on the floor, and roughhousing with siblings and parents, all while maintaining clear boundaries to ensure safety and security.
Picture days are happening this week! The Hummingbirds will go first, shortly after they arrive. Please let us know if you'd like them to change clothes after their pictures.
