First Grade: December 8-12, 2025

Dear First Grade Families,

Your attendance at the Winter Spiral added an extra meaningful dimension to the experience for your children. With the children, teacher, and attendants on one side of the spiral and the parents on the other, each child must have felt held in love and warmth. The glow of the candles was an outer symbol of each individual’s inner light at this dark time of year where togetherness means more than ever. Thank you for coming.

The vowels block has seen the class working with anchor images from fairy tales that students drew and labeled with CVC words. Inspired by the image of the Gingerbread Man taunting his way along his escape route, students developed their awareness of the short “u” sound by saying and writing the rhyming words run, fun and sun. Students are mastering phoneme deletion and becoming more adept at phoneme substitution and addition. Making a chain of words with these skills is a welcome challenge that prompts laughter and piques curiosity while improving learners’ phonemic awareness.

During this festive season, crafts are a natural expression of joy and fill a sunless day with a variety of colors and forms. The main medium of late has been paper! Honing their fine motor skills through folding and cutting, students have made individual origami gnomes as well as collaborative projects including the longest paper chain possible and window stars that transform the winter light through a filter of color.

May this season bring similar moments of color and joy to your homes. Happy holidays! We will look forward to welcoming students back in the new year.
