Kindergarten Honeybees: January 6 - 9, 2026
Dear Honeybee Families,
We hope you enjoyed a nourishing and restful long break with family and loved ones. It was a joy to reunite and gently return to our shared rhythm in the forest. The weather welcomed us back with an unseasonably springlike quality, offering rich opportunities for observation. The children noticed the increased activity of birds and squirrels, who seemed bolder than before, coming closer to our gathering spaces. A beautiful moment was spotted as two hawks perched side by side on a tree branch, an experience that invited wonder and reverence for the natural world.
Upon the return to our classroom, the children immediately observed the transformation of our nature table, which had shifted from autumn to a winter scene. This seasonal change supports the children’s developing sense of time and rhythm and strengthens their connection to the cycles of the year. They delighted in the evergreen trees, the sleigh, and the winter elements, which serve as visual anchors for imaginative play and storytelling. In our garden bed, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the vegetables had continued to grow during our time away, a lesson in patience, care, and the quiet work of the earth.
We shared a beloved winter tale, The Mitten, about a young boy named Nikki who asks his grandmother to knit him mittens as white as the snow. When one mitten is dropped and blends into the snowy landscape, a succession of animals seeking warmth discover it and squeeze inside. One by one- a mole, rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger, fox, bear, and finally a tiny mouse fill the mitten, stretching it to its limit. The story culminates in joyful surprise when the mouse’s whiskers tickle the bear’s nose, causing a mighty sneeze that sends all the animals flying. The children laughed together when Nikki returned to grandmama’s house, with one mitten the size of his hand and the other mitten the size of Nikki himself.
