Fourth & Fifth Grade: January 6 - 9, 2026

Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,

Happy 2026! Hope you all had a wonderful time with your families celebrating the holidays and closing out the calendar year.

The class, as well as the Sixth grade students, kicked off their first week of the spring semester with a very fun week of training for April’s Greek Pentathlon. The students worked together to clear out the long jump pit on our forest campus, so they can now get a feel for what they will experience when they participate in the long jump event at the event. Much of the week was spent doing some rhythmic long jump drills that help them gain more power in their take off. The students felt proud to feel a new sense of strength and confidence in their abilities after spending some time working on the fine details.

This week, the class began the sixth Main Lesson block: Geometry. Before diving into shapes, we spent time reviewing and learning about the key geometric lines: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines. Starting with learning about the key line can help the students understand the fine details that go into creating the shapes, including the ones that are already familiar to them. We also learned the key geometric angles: acute, right, and obtuse. One discovery made by the students is that each geometric angle is represented on an analog clock. This knowledge,  in combination with counting by 30s, helped the students identify the correct angle by where it lies on the clock.

In the upcoming week, the students will continue to practice their understanding of lines and angles with the goal of getting a better understanding of how to recreate and understand the structure of various multisided polygons (shapes).

Announcements & Reminders:

As we approach the heart of the winter season, there may be some very cold days to come. The plan is to continue practicing for the Greek Pentathlon outside as much as possible, as well as other potential class activities that are best conducted in an outdoor setting. To ensure comfort, please make sure your child comes to school with plenty of layers, plus a hat and a pair of gloves.

Please join us for our MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 19th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. You are also welcome to sign up to donate food items or drop off new socks and/or underwear during carpool any day until the 16th. Please see the Main Messenger or contact Ki Holly or Ki Kim for more information.
