Second & Third Grade: January 6 - 9, 2026

Hello Second and Third Grade Families,

Last week, we began our sixth block, which focuses on measurement. Students will learn about standard and nonstandard units of measurement and practice measuring length, volume, weight, and time. This week, the class practiced measuring objects around the school using their feet as nonstandard units of measurement and rulers as standard units of measurement. They also examined different measuring tools to see how many inches make a foot and how many feet make a yard.

When learning about miles, the class used the phrase “five tomatoes” to remember that there are 5,280 feet in a mile (five, two, eight, os). Each student practiced stepping next to a ruler to see how large a step they would need to take to walk one foot. They then practiced walking ten feet in the classroom using written and unwritten marks. When the children felt comfortable, they took a recording sheet and walked around the school, marking a tally every ten steps. When 528 marks had been tallied, they stopped and saw how close they were to an actual mile. The class loved this hands-on experience!

This week, we are learning about volume, and students will work in teams and follow directions for two recipes. Today, we made a no-bake cheesecake, and on Friday, we will make gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. These activities require students to carefully check their measurements and practice their reading skills. Working in teams, our classroom looks a lot like a cooking competition!

Our Second and Third graders are also hard at work on their reading and writing skills. Each child is practicing spelling and sight words in the classroom. Each week, the students will get ten additional spelling words to review in class and at home. On Fridays, we will have a weekly spelling bee. To review sight words, “sight word challenge” is being played, and to practice writing skills, the children are completing a creative writing piece. Finally, we are beginning a shared reader, The Magic Treehouse Dinosaurs Before Dark. To support your child’s reading at home, please spend time each night allowing your child to read with and to you. If you would like leveled books, please let me know. I would be happy to help find a book that is just right for them!
