Second & Third Grade: January 12 - 16, 2026
Hello Second and Third Grade Families,
Last week, the class explored measurement with length and volume. They worked with buckets of water to discover how many cups are in a gallon, quart, and pint, and how many teaspoons and tablespoons are in a cup. The students also looked at different ways to measure volume around the school, such as the water tank near the platform and the watering cans at the farm, and discussed the appropriate unit to use for measuring different objects. On Wednesday, the children followed a recipe independently and made no-bake cheesecake using the skills they had practiced earlier in the week.
This week, the class will learn about weight. The students will use scales to measure and compare objects around the school. They will also predict how many of one object will weigh the same as another, for example, how many paperclips it will take to weigh the same as a pencil. On Wednesday, they will begin a project that requires them to use length, volume, and weight to complete.
This block is accompanied by a review of the times tables (we are focusing on sevens, eights, and nines), as well as reading and writing practice in the afternoon. Each student is hard at work on a writing piece about what they would do if they woke up as their parents. The stories are hilarious, and the children cannot wait to share them with you when they are completed.
Please remember, this Friday we are taking a field trip to the Museum of Puppetry Arts. We will tour the museum, eat lunch, and then see the show The Dragon King in celebration of the Chinese New Year.
