Fourth & Fifth Grade: January 12 - 16, 2026

Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,

Thank you so much for taking the time to volunteer for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Your contributions were greatly appreciated by the school, and most importantly, by those who are less fortunate.

The class had a very action-packed week academically and physically. In our Geometry block, the students worked on freehand drawing multi-sided shapes like hexagons, heptagons, octagons, nonagons, and decagons. We also took a deep dive into learning about the six main types of quadrilaterals: square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, and kite. Building on the knowledge from the previous week’s lesson, we talked about the characteristics of each quadrilateral with our knowledge of parallel lines, right, acute, and obtuse angles.

In our grid books, we worked on forming precisely-sized quadrilaterals and identifying how to find the area and perimeter of each one. One interesting discovery was finding out how to find the area of a parallelogram due to its unique structure. The students brainstormed together to see if they could find a way to easily identify the answer. In the upcoming weeks, they will continue challenging themselves and discovering how to find the surface area of other geometric shapes.

In addition to geometric drawing and figuration, the class has also been practicing the various string figures such as a teacup, a witch’s broom, a star, the Eiffel Tower, cat whiskers, and Jacob’s ladder. With each challenge, we also spent time identifying the various geometric shapes that can be formed in the process and during the final product. It has been a fun complementary handwork activity with our current Main Lesson block.

Our class, along with the Sixth Grade students, has been continuing their training for April’s Greek Pentathlon. Even in the colder temperatures of this week, they all have adapted well and continued to train and have fun, showing great resilience! This week, the Seventh and Eighth Grade students had the opportunity to offer their experience and expertise by offering some advice and assistance during the long jump, javelin, and discus throwing practice. It was beautiful to see the guidance and mentorship from the older students. We hope to have more opportunities to collaborate again in the future!

Announcements & Reminders:

The April Auction is coming soon! We are open to suggestions of potential projects, as well as looking for an Auction Representative for the class to help oversee the project. If you have any ideas or you are interested in volunteering as a representative for the class, please reach out to me by email.
