“Día de los Muertos”
Forth & Fifth Grade: November 4 - 8, 2024
Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,
Last week, we began by honoring “Día de los Muertos” with a special altar and remembrance day. The students enjoyed Mexican sweet bread and reflected on the lives of those who are no longer with us, fostering a sense of gratitude and connection.
Academically, we kicked off the Freehand Geometry Block. In this block, students are introduced to the language of geometry through hands-on, artistic exploration. They started by transforming curves into circles and exploring shapes and symmetry in nature. Students practiced drawing symmetrical shapes, learning to observe and replicate natural patterns without using tools like rulers or compasses. This week, we will continue exploring geometric concepts, focusing on circles, lines, and key terms such as diameter, tangent, ellipses, and angles.
In Language Arts, students are continuing with their weekly spelling words. They are working on defining challenging words with the dictionary and applying them creatively by writing their own stories. In Math, we are reviewing and reinforcing the four main operations, with a particular focus on long division during extra main lessons.
A quick reminder: I will be out next week, and the class will be in the capable hands of Ki Gaby and Ki Nicole. They will continue to guide the students through their lessons.
Announcements and Reminders for Fourth & Fifth Grade:
11/16: Community Workday
11/22: Thanksgiving Luncheon 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (Half-day dismissal)
Please send in two full water bottles daily.
The mosquitos are still alive and thriving. Please have your child apply mosquito repellent before school! Reapplication is often necessary, so feel free to send in repellent.
Layers, layers, layers! They will continue to keep your child comfortable regardless of the weather/temperature range of the day. The mornings are now consistently cold. Please send your child to school with a coat, hat, gloves, and scarf. Please make sure that they are bundled up and ready when they are dropped off. Hand Warmers are helpful as well!
Our entire class is beginning to train for the Fifth Grade Pentathlon in April. Each morning, during Circle, the students will jog/run laps around the forest. Please make sure your child has enough water and is wearing appropriate shoes for this activity.
I brew tea for the class on chillier mornings. If you would like, feel free to share your child’s favorite tea with our class! I need at least six (6) tea bags for a pot, please. Please make sure the tea is caffeine-free!
With Gratitude,
Ki Paulyna
