Second and Third Grade: January 7-10, 2025

Happy New Year, Second and Third Grade Families,

The children were excited to return to school with stories of their adventures over the break. The class was also excited with the news that there might be a snow day in their future. They shared “tricks” to help it to snow, such as putting a spoon under their pillows, leaving ice on their front porch, and wearing their pajamas backward. They happily talked about the fun they had upon their return to school on Monday.

On Tuesday, we began our sixth block, which covers the Hebrew creation stories and has a focus on grammar, reading, and writing. In this block, the children will hear stories from the creation of the universe, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, and Moses. On Tuesday, the children heard the story of the creation of the universe, and on Thursday, they heard about life in Eden and the naming of the animals. In Waldorf schools, children hear these stories to guide them through the nine-year change. This is a time when children begin to become more conscious of the world around them and question the truth of the world around them and their purpose in it. The journey of the Ancient Hebrew people through the fall of man and their many trials mimic this period of childhood of learning to take responsibility for our actions, among other ideas. In later grades, the students will continue to learn about other ancient civilizations and hear their creation stories, allowing them to observe the many similarities between cultures around the world.

The Second Graders are beginning to write in paragraphs for the first time, and the Third Graders are practicing grammar skills. Last week, the children each wrote a paragraph about their favorite animal. After their paragraphs were completed, they shared their writing with their peers. The students were proud to share their hard work with their classmates, and their confidence in writing is growing each day.

As the weather will remain frigid for the foreseeable future, we will begin our day with a morning tea. If you would like to send in a caffeine-free tea to share with the class, it would be greatly appreciated. So far, the favorite flavors of the children are orange, lavender, and peppermint.
