Fourth and Fifth Grade: January 7-10, 2025

Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Parents,

Welcome back! The class (teacher included!) was ready to embrace the cooler weather and the rhythm of returning to school as they dove into their new block: Fractions II. In this block, students will expand their understanding of fractions by learning how to reduce and expand fractions and work with mixed fractions in addition and subtraction. We will continue practicing multiplication and long division, ensuring these foundational skills are strong.

In true Waldorf fashion, we bring fractions to life through hands-on activities and real-world examples. For instance, we used a baguette to demonstrate equivalent fractions, sparking curiosity and making math tangible and fun. These types of experiments help students see fractions as a part of everyday life, connecting abstract concepts to something meaningful.

In our extra Main Lesson, we continue exploring the rich history of North American Indigenous peoples. The stories we share serve as both inspiration and context for grammar and language arts lessons. Waldorf education integrates spelling and language arts into the rhythm of the day as the students practice composition, dictation, and oral recitation, helping to strengthen their understanding of sentence structure, parts of speech, and storytelling.

This combination of hands-on learning, storytelling, and creative expression allows students to approach their subjects with curiosity and joy, fostering both their intellectual and emotional growth.
