Kindergarten Chickadees: March 24-28, 2025
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
Last week, the students expanded on their imaginative play in the classroom. Over the past few weeks, some children have enjoyed using pieces of wood and other materials to make vehicles to play on, like airplanes and trains. This week, a group of students worked intently together to build a large, detailed airplane to take imaginative trips to faraway places. The airplane included wings, a tail, seats, and a luggage compartment with blankets and toys stored as luggage, and children spent much of their free play time engaged in this activity. Other students tied knitted scarves around their heads and pretended to be tree-climbing ninjas. A previously unexplored, lightly wooded area of the classroom has been discovered by a group of older children, who have been using it as a nest while they pretend to be baby dinosaurs.
This week, the students will take home their terrariums! You can continue caring for these little gardens at home by keeping them uncovered in a sunny place and keeping the soil moist. Students are also continuing to work on snakes, and these will come home as they are completed. While this is a challenging fine motor activity for many students, they enjoy the process and are proud and excited when they complete their stuffed animals. Each student can go at their own pace as they work, balancing challenge with growth and work with play. Using this method allows the children to build resilience and learn a new skill in a way that increases self-compassion, a growth mindset, and enjoyment of learning. When we return from Spring Break, the children will plant seeds to grow flowers, herbs, and lettuce.
Announcements and Reminders for Chickadee Kindergarten:
Rest mats will be sent home this week to be washed. Please return them on our child’s first day back at school after the break.
Creek shoes will also be sent home this week to be washed if needed and checked for sizing. We will begin visiting the creek again on warmer days after the break; please send creek shoes with your child when they return from the break.
